How It Works
LexUnits connects to your Clio account via OAuth 2.0 — the same secure authorisation protocol used by Clio's official integration partners. Once connected, you can push generated billing entries to Clio as activities, with automatic matter matching and rate syncing.
Connect Your Clio Account
Open the LexUnits sidebar, click "Connect Clio" in your profile panel, and authorise the connection in the Clio consent screen. One-time setup that takes 30 seconds.
Generate Billing Entries
Upload a meeting recording, paste a transcript, or drop in documents. LexUnits AI generates professional billing entries in 6-minute units with confidence scoring.
Review & Polish
Scan entries, edit descriptions, adjust time units. Use free AI Polish to refine billing language. Set matter numbers and timekeeper in Session Context.
Push to Clio
Click the green "Push to Clio" button. Entries are sent as Clio activities with the correct matter, time quantity, and rate. Appears in Clio instantly.
Key Features
🎯 Matter Auto-Matching
Include a matter number in Session Context or in the entry's associated matter field. LexUnits searches your Clio matters by display number and auto-links the entry. Exact match first, then fuzzy matching.
💰 Rate Syncing
Timekeeper rates from your LexUnits rate list are sent with each entry. Set the timekeeper in Session Context and the correct rate auto-applies to every entry in the batch.
🇦🇺 Australian Instance
LexUnits connects to the Australian Clio instance (au.app.clio.com) natively. No region switching, no US-default workarounds. Built specifically for Australian firms on Clio.
🔄 Auto Token Refresh
OAuth tokens are stored securely and refreshed automatically when they approach expiry. You stay connected without re-authorising. Connection status is visible in the sidebar.
⏱️ Time in Seconds
Clio's API requires time quantities in seconds. LexUnits handles the conversion automatically — you see familiar 6-minute units, Clio receives the correct second count.
🆓 Push is Free
Pushing entries to Clio never costs credits. Credits are used only for generating entries. Once generated, you can push, re-push, or export as many times as needed at no additional cost.
Managing Your Connection
Your Clio connection status is displayed in the LexUnits sidebar under your profile. The status shows one of three states: Connected (green — active and ready to push), Expired (amber — token needs refresh, usually resolves automatically), or Not connected (grey — click "Connect Clio" to set up).
You can disconnect your Clio account at any time from the sidebar. Disconnecting removes the stored OAuth tokens from LexUnits. It does not affect any entries already pushed to Clio — those remain in your Clio account as normal activities.
For Firms Already Using Clio
If your firm already uses Clio for matter management, billing, and invoicing, LexUnits slots into your workflow as a billing entry generator. The typical workflow for Clio firms is: record a meeting or receive documents, generate entries in LexUnits, review and polish, push to Clio. From there, your existing Clio invoicing workflow takes over — the entries appear as activities on the relevant matter and are included in your next invoice run.
LexUnits does not modify existing Clio data. It only creates new activity entries via the API. It cannot read, edit, or delete your existing Clio entries, matters, or contacts. The integration is write-only for activities and read-only for matters (used for auto-matching).

Also Export to Other Platforms
Not on Clio? LexUnits also generates platform-specific XLSX export files for Actionstep, LEAP, Smokeball, and a Generic format for any other system. An Actionstep API integration (direct push, similar to Clio) is currently in development. For import instructions, see our PMS import guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does LexUnits work with the Australian Clio instance?
Yes. LexUnits connects to the Australian Clio instance (au.app.clio.com). If your Clio account is on the AU region, the integration works natively — no region switching or workarounds required.
Does pushing entries to Clio cost credits?
No. Push to Clio is free. Credits are only used when generating billing entries (transcription, document processing, etc.). Once entries are generated, pushing them to Clio costs nothing.
Can LexUnits match billing entries to Clio matters automatically?
Yes. When you include a matter number in Session Context or in the entry's associated matter field, LexUnits searches your Clio matters for a display number match. Exact matches are prioritised. If a match is found, the entry is automatically linked to the Clio matter when pushed.
What happens if a matter number does not match?
If LexUnits cannot find a matching matter in your Clio account, the push for that specific entry will fail with an error message. Other entries with valid matter matches will push successfully. Check the matter number in the entry and ensure it matches the Clio display number exactly.
Is my Clio data secure?
Yes. LexUnits uses OAuth 2.0 (the same protocol Clio uses for all third-party integrations). Your Clio password is never stored by LexUnits. OAuth tokens are stored encrypted in the database and are automatically refreshed. You can revoke access at any time from your Clio account settings or from the LexUnits sidebar.
